Features
This chapter gives a short tour of what members can do on a ProjectWikit site. Pages, ratings, tags, history and the forum work much as they do on Wikidot. What each person may do is decided by the site's roles; see Roles and permissions. The admin panel is covered in Site administration, wiki syntax in Syntax and modules in Modules.
Accounts
Members sign in with a username and password, and an email address is required to sign up. A site can require the address to be verified first; until then the account can only browse, and cannot edit, rate, post or send messages (see Site administration).
What you enter when signing up is your display name, and the site derives your username from it: lowercased, with everything that is not a letter or digit turned into a hyphen, so Adam Smith becomes adam-smith. The username is used to sign in, in your profile address (/-/users/<username>), in [[user]] references and in @ mentions. It can be changed once every 30 days; after a change, the old address and old references no longer point to you.
Settings lets you change your profile, avatar, email address, password, username and interface language. A forgotten password can be reset through a verified email address. After an email or password change the old address is notified, and the email-change notice carries a link to undo it.
Administrators can send invitation links; opening one and choosing a username and password is enough to join.
Claiming a Wikidot account
When a site has been imported from Wikidot, the original members exist as unclaimed accounts whose names start with wd:. The original owner can take one over:
- Open the sign-up page and type your original Wikidot username into Username.
- Select Send code. The code is sent as a private message to your Wikidot account.
- Enter the code, your email address and a new password, and submit.
The claimed account receives the authorship, votes and forum posts imported under that Wikidot name. The code is issued by an external service, wikit.unitreaty.org, which the site's server must be able to reach. An administrator can also send a claim link for a particular Wikidot account.
Personal pages
The avatar in the top bar and the menu next to your name lead to these pages, which gather your records from every site on the instance:
| Page | Contents |
|---|---|
Profile (/-/users/<username>) | Bio, roles held on each site, recent edits and recent posts |
Notifications (/-/notifications) | See Watching and notifications |
Messages (/-/messages) | See Private messages |
Favourites (/-/favourites) | Pages you favourited |
Ratings (/-/ratings) | Pages you rated |
Likes (/-/liked-posts) | Forum posts you liked |
Recent edits and recent posts list only what the visitor is allowed to see.
Pages
- Editing: pages are written in wikitext, and the editor has a preview; turn on Advanced source editor for syntax highlighting. When two people edit at once, the later save overwrites the earlier one.
- Page names: only Latin letters, digits,
-,_and:, with the part before the first colon being the category. Put other scripts in the title. - History: every change leaves a revision that can be viewed, compared and reverted. A revert restores the content, title, name, tags, parent, authors and files together, and is saved as a new revision.
- Deleting: a page can be moved to the
deleted:category, from which it can be restored, or deleted permanently. Permanent deletion cannot be undone. - Tags: a tag cannot contain spaces, Latin letters are lowercased when saved, and a tag written
category:namegoes into that tag category. When the site does not allow new tags, only existing tags can be used. - Everything else: tags, files, parent page, locking, renaming, authors and backlinks are in the options bar below the page.
- Missing pages: members with permission can create them on the spot. A site can replace the default notice with a
_404page.
Ratings and favourites
A site or category can use Upvote/downvote (+1/-1), Stars (0–5), or no rating at all. The rating panel shows how the votes are spread and who cast them.
Favourites are private: a page shows only how many people favourited it, and nobody, the author included, can see who.
Forum
The forum is made of sections, categories and threads, with replies nested under the post they answer. Every page has its own discussion, opened with Discuss below the page. Posts can be liked, and @username mentions a member. Members with permission can pin, lock and move threads.
The forum relies on a few forum: pages written by pwikit seed (see Command line); changing them can break it.
Watching and notifications
Select Watch above a page or thread to follow it. You are notified when a watched page changes or a watched thread gets a new post; pages you create and threads you start are watched automatically.
You are also notified when someone replies to or likes your post, mentions you in a post, or sends you a message. Members who can open the admin panel are also told about new pwikit releases, and about new tickets, membership applications and message reports (only those who can handle them).
Your own actions never notify you, and nothing you are not allowed to see does either.
Private messages
Members can message each other. Blocking a member stops them from messaging you.
If someone harasses you, select their messages in the conversation and report them with a reason; this goes to the site's administrators. Administrators see only the messages you selected; superusers can see the whole conversation.
Search
The search box in the header searches page titles and text across the site, and can be narrowed by author, tag, category and creation date. Pages you cannot view never appear, and a site can exclude chosen pages, tags and categories from search.
Language
The interface language is chosen in this order: the language you picked in Settings, the languages your browser asks for, the site's default language, and finally Simplified Chinese. ProjectWikit ships with Simplified Chinese; adding translation files to locales/ in the data directory translates the pages the server generates, while page buttons, the editor and dialogs stay in Simplified Chinese.
